5 Situations Where You Let Down Your Guards To Be Your True Self

Life’s a dance you learn as you go
Sometimes you lead, sometimes you follow
Don’t worry about what you don’t know
Life’s a dance you learn as you go…
(Song by John Michael)

Alas! If we could only stop worrying about all that we do not know. Is it not that which we do not know that makes us act as if we know it all? If only we were not so scared of looking like a fool or being made a fool of. If we could let down our guards more often and freely dance to a life that is all about having good time while we are here.

No matter what life we have woven around us or what tapestry runs through our individual worlds, life still does its magic. Born human, we all experience that ‘lively lightness’ despite our own mechanical, diplomatic selves. The times when we truly belong to a moment, our conditioned mind rests and our heart opens up.

Let Down Your Guards

1. Answering the simple questions of innocent curiosity

Child is father of the man – so said the great poet William Wordsworth. While we are busy lost to our own frantic minds, innocent questions like “Can we take a bath in a meteor shower?”, “Is Santa real?” or “Why are people of different colors?” can make us stop and awake to the wonder that life is. With the touching simplicity of their queries, kids rekindle our sense of amazement. The way they look at the most basic of things with utter joy can bring sparkle to our eyes too, leaving us feeling warm-hearted and more open.

2. Late night conversations under the open sky

Let Down Your Guards

There is something magical about such conversations. The vastness of the night sky fills us with hope and lightness. Whoever is it with you; you find yourself so close to the person, sharing what you feel.

3. Being an explorer in a foreign land

Let Down Your Guards

We might be accomplished professionals, students from top universities or owners of huge estates; but when we travel we are all travelers. Our conditioned personality that we try to exert in our daily lives ceases to dominate when we are nothing else but explorers in a foreign land. We freely befriend people, get amazed at simplest of things, and laugh a lot.

4. On the road, in the rain, and no rush

Let Down Your Guards

Usually a sudden rain makes people run around looking for shelter. But once in a while you may feel like stepping into it. The childlike fun time is indeed one of those subtle life moments where life becomes what it really is – simple, happy and boundless. Walking along the city streets with drizzle washing away the weight of our complicated thoughts, sharing our ideas, hopes and emotions with a close mate turns out to be a natural, joyous experience.

5. Dancing without inhibitions

Let Down Your Guards

This is the simplest one. In the words of William W. Purkey, “You’ve gotta dance like there’s nobody watching, love like you’ll never be hurt, sing like there’s nobody listening, and live like it’s heaven on earth.”
